SNE Research, a market research institution in South Korea, recently released a report on the global installed capacity of Electric vehicle battery in April. According to the data, the global installed capacity of Electric vehicle battery increased by 52.3% year on year, with a total of 27.1GWh, maintaining a 22 month growth.

As for battery enterprises, the installed capacity of CATL has increased by 49.5% compared with that of last year, still occupying the top position in the world in terms of installed capacity; BYD continued its offensive momentum of surpassing Panasonic in March, with a 233% surge in installed capacity in April, surpassing LG New Energy and reaching second place.

LG New Energy is the only battery company on the list to show a decline in installed capacity and market share, with a decline of 22.6% in April, ranking third; Panasonic's installed capacity is 0.3GWh less than LG New Energy, but its market share (increased by 1.3% year-on-year and 3.2% month on month) and installed capacity (increased by 70.1%) have both increased, ranking fourth. SK On ranked fifth with a growth rate of 137.5%; Samsung SDI surpassed China Innovation Airline and ranked sixth with a 0.4GWh advantage, but the year-on-year growth rate was not high, at 25.9%.

The seventh to tenth place are all Chinese battery enterprises, which are China Innovation Airlines, Guoxuan High tech, Xinwangda and Honeycomb Energy in the Order of precedence. The installed capacity and market share of China Innovation Airlines and Guoxuan High Tech have both increased; Xinwangda is the most outstanding performer on the list - its installed capacity surged by 709.4% year-on-year in April, and its market share increased from 0.3% to 1.7%, making it into the top ten for the first time this year; The installed capacity of Honeycomb Energy is only 0.1GWh less than Xinwangda, but there is also a year-on-year growth of 131.4%.

SNE Research believes that the growth rate of CATL and LG New Energy declined in April mainly because of the epidemic hit Tesla in April. At the same time, it also believes that with the normalization of Tesla's factory operations, Ningde and LG New Energy will also recover rapidly. Among them, LG New Energy may surpass BYD and return to second place.

Overall, in April, the gap between battery companies in China and South Korea was further widening. Among them, the market share of Korean battery companies is about 25.9%, while the market share of Chinese battery companies is about 55.3%.

As of April this year, the total registered energy of electric vehicle batteries worldwide in 2022 is 122.9GWh. Compared to the same period in 2021, this number has increased by 83.4%. In fact, since the beginning of the third quarter of 2020, the curve of the battery market has been continuously rising. In another report released in May, SNE Research said that it expected that the global total capacity of Electric vehicle battery would reach 1273GWh in 2022, an increase of 28.1% year on year.
